Usman Nurmagomedov no longer has to wait for the clock.

The undefeated PFL lightweight champion became an unrestricted free agent on October 29 when the 90-day matching period in his contract expired, according to MMA Junkie. He can now negotiate with and sign for another promotion without giving PFL the contractual right to match the offer.

That clears the way for the conversation everyone in MMA has been having since July: will Nurmagomedov join the UFC? It does not answer it. Neither the UFC nor Nurmagomedov has announced a deal, and PFL can still try to re-sign its champion.

Why the timing matters

Nurmagomedov fought out his PFL contract with the kind of performance that makes a negotiation expensive. He stopped the previously unbeaten Archie Colgan at 3:42 of the first round on July 31. PFL's official result lists a head kick, a left hook, uppercuts and ground strikes in the finishing sequence.

The victory moved him to 22-0 with one no contest. He is 28 years old, owns championships from Bellator and PFL, and has gone from a highly regarded prospect in Khabib Nurmagomedov's camp to one of the best lightweights outside the UFC.

The original deal did not end cleanly at the final bell. PFL retained matching rights for 90 days, which kept another promotion from simply putting a contract in front of Nurmagomedov and signing him. MMA Junkie reported that he turned down a new PFL offer during that period. The reported rejection did not force an immediate move. It gave him a chance to see what the wider market would pay once the window closed.

The UFC interest is real, but the contract is not

Dana White was asked in August whether the UFC would pursue Nurmagomedov. His answer was one word: "Sure." White smiled, then added a smiling emoji when the clip circulated online. It was a clear expression of interest, not a signing announcement.

The family and training connections make the UFC look like the obvious destination. Khabib Nurmagomedov is Usman's cousin and coach. UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev is a longtime teammate, and Umar Nurmagomedov competes near the top of the UFC bantamweight division. Those ties can open a door. They do not settle the money.

Usman made that point after beating Colgan. "Legacy doesn't pay check," he said during his post-fight media appearance. "I have a family." The grammar was rough, but the message was not. He has already won belts and protected his unbeaten record. This contract is also about getting paid while his leverage is at its highest.

PFL still has a decision to make

Losing Nurmagomedov would cost PFL an undefeated champion who just knocked out an undefeated challenger. Keeping him could require the promotion to beat an offer from the UFC without the protection of a matching clause.

The leverage now shifts to the fighter. Nurmagomedov is not asking a promotion to project what he might become. He is arriving with a 22-fight unbeaten record, two major titles and a fresh first-round finish. The UFC can offer the division with the biggest audience and most recognized roster. PFL can offer familiarity, a championship position and whatever financial case it is willing to make.

For now, the only completed move is the expiration of the matching period. Nurmagomedov is free to choose. Until a promotion puts his name on an official release, every claimed destination is still a prediction.
