UFC 336 now has two title fights and a welterweight matchup built for violence. The UFC announced Saturday that Carlos Prates will face the unbeaten Michael Morales for the interim 170-pound championship on Jan. 30, 2027, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
Flyweight champion Joshua Van will defend his belt against Manel Kape in the main event. Prates and Morales will meet over five rounds in the co-main event, with the winner in line for undisputed champion Islam Makhachev.
Toronto gets two belts
The UFC confirmed both fights during the UFC 333 broadcast and followed with an official announcement. Van brings an 18-2 record and an eight-fight winning streak into his defense. Sportsnet reports that his last three appearances have all involved the flyweight title, including his September victory over Alexandre Pantoja.
Kape is 23-7 and finally gets his first UFC title shot. The former RIZIN champion has won four straight, all by finish. Against Van, whose speed and willingness to exchange can turn a clean tactical fight into a sprint without much warning, that streak is more than a promotional hook.
The co-main event may pull even more attention. Prates is 24-7 and has finished all seven of his UFC wins. Morales is 19-0, with seven wins in the promotion. The official UFC announcement framed the winner as Makhachev's next challenger rather than an interim champion who might sit and wait.
Why the UFC created an interim belt
Makhachev had been discussed for the Toronto card, but the champion will not compete in January. At the UFC 333 post-fight news conference, UFC CEO Dana White said Makhachev had been slated for the date before asking to return after Ramadan.
"On average, Islam fights like once a year," White said, according to MMA Junkie. "He was slated for January and then said, 'I don't want to fight until after Ramadan,' and you can't hold up divisions like this. You've got to keep moving, and this fight makes sense."
That explains the belt, even if three months is a quick trigger for an interim championship. The fight itself needs no sales pitch. Prates and Morales are the two contenders most likely to punish a mistake immediately, and neither has reached a UFC title fight by grinding out safe decisions.
Two knockout paths to gold
Prates has the deeper professional record and the nastier recent list of victims. His current run includes knockouts of former champions Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena. He is patient enough to let an opponent believe the danger has passed, then changes the fight with one shot.
Morales has not fought since stopping Sean Brady in November 2025, so the layoff is the obvious question. His upside is just as obvious. He has stopped Neil Magny, Gilbert Burns and Brady in the first round in three consecutive appearances, and his 19-0 record has survived every step up in competition.
Morales has already warned Prates to focus on the opponent in front of him rather than Makhachev. That is fair advice. Prates expected a shot at the undisputed champion, but Morales is not a placeholder. He is younger, undefeated and dangerous before a fight has time to settle.
Kape will try to pull Van into the firefight that carried him to four straight finishes. Later that night, Prates will try to hand Morales the first loss of his career. UFC 336 gives Toronto two title fights without making either one feel like filler.
