Staph Infection Put Sean Brady in Hospital and Scrapped UFC Vegas 124 Main Event

Sean Brady could barely walk by the end of a training day that had started normally. The swelling in his left knee turned out to be a staph infection, he says, and the hospital stay that followed cost him the UFC Vegas 124 main event.
The UFC has officially removed Brady from his November 7 welterweight fight with Gabriel Bonfim at Meta APEX. Bonfim is off the card as well. Johnny Walker and Waldo Cortes-Acosta will headline the event in a heavyweight bout, confirming the replacement matchup FightPulse reported Thursday.
Brady supplied the missing medical detail on The BradyBags Show. He said fluid taken from his knee tested positive for staph after he spent three days in the hospital receiving IV antibiotics. The diagnosis and treatment details come from Brady's own account and have not been independently confirmed through medical records.
A normal session, then he could not walk
Brady said he practiced in the morning without a problem. Later, while getting on a bike for another workout, he noticed that his knee was swollen. By 9 p.m., he said, he could not walk.
"I knew it was an infection," Brady said. "I knew right away from dealing with my arm and my leg. The feeling that you get, it's just different. It's just a different pain."
He went to the hospital at 6 a.m. the next morning. Doctors drew blood, started antibiotics through an IV and removed fluid from the knee, according to Brady. He said the lab needed time to grow and identify the bacteria, keeping him in the hospital for three days before results began showing staph.
The knee did not settle after the first drainage. Brady showed viewers a syringe filled with fluid and said doctors had to drain the area repeatedly because it kept filling again.
That ended any realistic chance of training, cutting to 170 pounds and fighting five rounds on November 7. Brady said the infection was still present when he recorded the show.
"I can't fight in two weeks," he said. "It's just not an option."
The fight was cancelled, not rebooked
The UFC's update confirms that Brady-Bonfim has been cancelled from UFC Vegas 124, but it does not give either welterweight a new date. That distinction matters. Brady hopes the matchup has been postponed rather than lost, yet the promotion has made no commitment to keep it together.
Brady said he asked about moving the fight to a December card and was told the remaining events were full. His preferred fallback is the UFC's January 16 Fight Night in Texas. He is open to facing Bonfim there or taking a different opponent.
Bonfim loses the booking through no fault of his own. He had been preparing for the biggest opportunity of his UFC run, a five-round fight with a top welterweight. The late cancellation leaves him without a replacement opponent and removes the entire division from the top of next Saturday's card.
Another serious infection for Brady
This is not Brady's first fight withdrawal involving an infection. In 2023, he pulled out of a bout with Jack Della Maddalena after an infection in his left elbow required surgery and weeks of IV antibiotics. He referred to that history while explaining why the pain in his knee felt familiar.
The immediate concern is his health, not the calendar. Brady believes the knee could clear within a few weeks, but his own description shows why that estimate cannot be treated as a return date. Fluid was still accumulating after repeated drainage, and he was unable to train.
Brady is 19-2 overall and 9-2 in the UFC. His unanimous decision over Joaquin Buckley in May put him back in the win column after a loss to Michael Morales. Bonfim, 20-1, had won seven UFC fights and was set for his first main event.
Walker-Cortes-Acosta keeps UFC Vegas 124 intact, and the promotion now lists that heavyweight fight as the official headliner. Brady's timetable is far less settled. He wants to fight in January, but first the infection has to clear and the knee has to stop filling with fluid. Until then, there is no new booking to announce.
