Magomed Magomedov arrived in ONE Championship with a perfect record, a late call and a difficult first assignment. He left Bangkok at 16-0, although Lucas Gabriel made him sweat through the final minutes.

Two judges gave Magomedov the decision after three rounds in the ONE Fight Night 49 main event at Lumpinee Stadium. The Dagestan-born lightweight used repeated takedowns and long stretches of top control to build his case before Gabriel reversed him and closed the fight with a hard burst of knees.

It was close enough to split the judges, but not close enough to end Magomedov's unbeaten run. The win also gave ONE a fresh challenger on the same weekend that Tye Ruotolo took the lightweight MMA title from Christian Lee.

A strong start, then a scare

Gabriel found Magomedov with punches early, but the newcomer did not spend much time trying to win a kickboxing match. He changed levels, put the Brazilian on his back and went to work from inside the guard. Magomedov stayed heavy on top, mixed in punches and looked for openings whenever Gabriel tried to scramble.

The second round followed a similar route at first. Magomedov completed another takedown, only for Gabriel to do a better job protecting himself and creating room to stand. Once they were back on their feet, Gabriel landed a head kick. Magomedov shot again but could not finish that attempt.

Magomedov returned to his wrestling in the third and appeared to be settling the fight with another spell of control. Gabriel finally turned the position as he worked up from the canvas. He drove Magomedov's head down and landed knees while the unbeaten fighter tried to recover.

That rally changed the feel of the fight. It did not change enough minds at ringside. Magomedov received the split decision in his promotional debut, while Gabriel took his first loss under the ONE banner.

The weight miss follows him home

The result came with an awkward detail that cannot be ignored in any title discussion. Magomedov weighed 175.4 pounds, above ONE's 170-pound lightweight limit. Gabriel weighed 167.8. Both men passed the promotion's hydration test, but the main event went ahead at a 175.4-pound catchweight and Magomedov forfeited 30 percent of his purse.

Making weight would not have changed what happened after the bell. It does change how cleanly the winner can move into a championship fight. A contender can earn a title chance at catchweight, but he still has to prove he can hit the championship limit before the belt is available.

Magomedov also took this fight on short notice after Alibeg Rasulov withdrew with an injury. That matters. A full camp gives him more time to manage the cut, but it is not a guarantee. The miss remains part of the result until he makes 170 pounds in ONE.

A title path, not a title booking

ONE's official report said Magomedov could possibly receive the next shot at Ruotolo. The promotion did not announce that fight, and the wording matters.

There is an obvious reason to consider it. Magomedov is unbeaten, he just defeated a contender who had beaten former champion Ok Rae Yoon, and his wrestling would force Ruotolo to solve a very different problem from the one Christian Lee presented. There is also a reason not to rush the booking: Magomedov missed the divisional limit before the biggest win of his career.

The matchup itself would be hard to ignore. Ruotolo won the belt by hurting Lee on the feet and then taking his back. Magomedov won his debut by putting Gabriel down repeatedly and controlling the exchanges on the mat. One is a world-class submission grappler whose MMA striking is developing fast. The other has built a 16-fight unbeaten record around pressure and wrestling.

That is an argument for the fight, not confirmation of it. Magomedov did enough in Bangkok to join the title conversation. His next job is simpler than the matchup speculation: sign for 170 pounds and make it.
