Jake Paul has his comeback opponent, and it is a man who has spent most of his career knocking people out under a different set of rules.

Paul will box former GLORY champion and PFL standout Cedric Doumbe on Thursday, December 24, at Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. Most Valuable Promotions announced the matchup Monday morning. The fight is scheduled for eight rounds at the 200-pound cruiserweight limit with 10-ounce gloves.

Broadcast details have not been announced. The promotion will hold public kickoff press conferences in Paris on November 10 and Dubai on November 12.

Paul returns after a broken jaw

This will be Paul's first fight since Anthony Joshua stopped him in the sixth round of their December 2025 heavyweight bout. Paul suffered a fractured jaw, underwent two surgeries and only received clearance to resume full contact in October.

Paul is 12-2 with seven knockouts as a professional boxer. He built much of that record against names familiar to MMA fans, including Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva and Nate Diaz, before moving into bouts with Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Joshua.

The opponent announcement did not come with a quiet sales pitch. Paul acknowledged the injury and the gap in activity while making the ruleset clear.

"I'm rusty, my jaw is janky and I don't have kickboxing world titles like you do," Paul said in MVP's announcement. "But guess what? This isn't kickboxing, mon ami. This is boxing."

That distinction is the entire fight. Doumbe has far more high-level striking experience, but Paul has logged 14 professional boxing matches while Doumbe has logged one.

Doumbe brings real knockout credentials

Doumbe, 34, went 75-7-1 with 45 knockouts in kickboxing and won the GLORY welterweight title twice. He then moved into MMA, where all six of his victories have come by knockout.

His PFL debut lasted nine seconds. Doumbe flattened Jordan Zebo in Paris in September 2023, the finish Paul referenced in Monday's announcement. His lone MMA loss came the following March when a splinter in his foot led to a stoppage against Baissangour Chamsoudinov. Doumbe returned in May 2024 and stopped Jaleel Willis in the first round under the Bellator banner.

He has not competed since that Willis fight. His only professional boxing appearance came in April 2015, a victory over Leonardo Damian Bruzzese.

Doumbe answered Paul's trash talk with his own. He said Paul had "never faced a problem like me" and promised to "finish the job Joshua started." Both lines came from the official MVP release, not a separate interview.

A crossover fight that cuts both ways

Doumbe is not another retired MMA wrestler learning to box on the fly. His timing, composure and power were built over more than 80 kickboxing bouts. He knows how to read a striker and punish a mistake.

That background also gives him experience with a ring, boxing gloves and opponents who can strike back at a high level. His transition is not starting from zero. The fundamentals overlap, but the defensive priorities do not. The adjustment lies in narrowing the game. A kickboxer's stance and distance account for attacks to the legs and body that Paul cannot use, while boxing allows much more time to work with the hands at close range.

Boxing still removes a large part of what made him a champion. There will be no kicks, knees or extended clinch work, and his defensive habits were developed around threats that will not exist on December 24. Paul, for all the arguments around his matchmaking, has spent six years competing under the exact rules they will use in Dubai.

The weight deserves attention too. Doumbe fought at welterweight in GLORY and is listed at 170 pounds by PFL. The boxing match is contracted at cruiserweight, a limit 30 pounds above that division. Paul has already boxed at and above cruiserweight, including his heavyweight bout with Joshua.

None of that settles who wins. It does explain why the matchup is more interesting than the usual boxer-versus-MMA label. Doumbe is the better-credentialed pure striker. Paul is the more experienced professional boxer and the naturally larger man.

Why Dubai and PFL are part of the story

The booking also keeps the event inside one corporate family. MVP and PFL merged earlier this year, and Doumbe remains one of the PFL roster's most recognizable European fighters. The official announcement described the show as part of the combined company's expansion across boxing and MMA.

Coca-Cola Arena is already hosting PFL Dubai on November 14, headlined by Vadim Nemkov's heavyweight title defense against Sergei Bilostenniy. Buyers for that event receive the first presale window for Paul-Doumbe tickets on November 6.

General ticket sales begin November 15. The undercard and global broadcast partner remain open questions, which makes the two press conferences the next useful checkpoints rather than just another round of insults.
