Israel Adesanya heard Alex Pereira lay out a backup plan for UFC 335 and immediately found the part he did not like.

Pereira told Connect Cast that he would return to light heavyweight if he loses his Dec. 12 heavyweight fight with Sergei Pavlovich. Adesanya's objection was not really about the division. It was that Pereira had put the possibility of defeat into the conversation before the fight.

"I don't like the fact he's putting that out there," Adesanya said on the Precision podcast with Demetrious Johnson. "What the f*ck do you mean, 'If I lose?'"

Pereira has already named his fallback

During his Oct. 23 interview with Connect Cast, Pereira was asked directly whether he would stay at heavyweight after a loss to Pavlovich.

"No, I wouldn't stay," Pereira said. "I'd go to light heavyweight. I think that would be the ideal thing to do."

He said the size difference matters against natural heavyweights and described 205 pounds as the division where he was already comfortable. Pereira also said he would expect a title fight if he moved back down. That is his claim, not a booking or a promise from the UFC.

The answer was practical. Pereira did not predict that he would lose, and elsewhere in the same interview he said he cannot approach a fight halfway because the physical risk is too high. Still, fighters know how quickly a contingency plan can sound like doubt when it becomes public.

Why Adesanya wants him back at 205

Adesanya argued that light heavyweight is Pereira's best fit and questioned why his old rival did not return there after his June outing with Ciryl Gane. He called 205 pounds Pereira's "sweet spot" and told him to strip the message back to the hard-edged "Chama" identity that followed his rise through the UFC.

"I don't know why he's taking this fight," Adesanya said. "It doesn't make sense to me."

There is history behind the criticism. Pereira and Adesanya met twice in kickboxing and twice in the UFC. Pereira won the first three meetings across the two sports before Adesanya knocked him out in their April 2023 UFC rematch. Their relationship has softened since then, so this sounded less like an old rival taking a cheap shot and more like a fighter objecting to the message.

The UFC 335 stakes are real

The UFC's official event page lists Pavlovich vs. Pereira as a heavyweight bout on UFC 335 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. MMA Junkie reports that it is scheduled as a five-round co-main event. Charles Oliveira vs. Diego Lopes headlines the card.

Pereira is choosing another heavyweight test rather than retreating immediately to a division where he has already held gold. That ambition is the appeal of the matchup, but it also makes his exit plan impossible to ignore. Pavlovich is not a tune-up, and Pereira has now told everyone exactly what a second setback at heavyweight would mean.

Adesanya's warning does not prove Pereira lacks confidence. It does frame the pressure cleanly. A win on Dec. 12 keeps Pereira's heavyweight title path open. A loss turns his proposed return to 205 pounds from a hypothetical into the first question he will have to answer.
