Arman Tsarukyan believes the waiting is finally over. The UFC lightweight contender says he has been told his next trip to the Octagon will be for the title, with the fight expected early in 2027.

There is one fairly important blank left to fill in: Tsarukyan does not know who will be standing across from him.

Tsarukyan says the UFC has given him its word

Speaking with MMA Fighting before his Real American Freestyle match against Dillon Danis, Tsarukyan said he had heard that a championship fight was next. He also backed away from his recent talk of dropping to featherweight.

"As I heard, I'm going to fight for the title next," Tsarukyan said. He placed the likely timing at the beginning of next year but did not name a date or event.

That wording matters. Tsarukyan is describing what he says he has been told; the UFC has not announced a lightweight title fight for him. Until a bout agreement is signed and the promotion puts a date on the calendar, this remains a contender's account of the plan rather than an official booking.

One elbow changed the conversation

Tsarukyan's claim carries weight because of what happened at UFC 331 in September. Mauricio Ruffy had him in trouble early, but Tsarukyan stayed in the fight and ended it with a vicious first-round elbow. The UFC's own post-event coverage described the win as a return to championship contention, and Dana White praised the way Tsarukyan handled his comeback.

It was the sort of finish Tsarukyan needed. He was already one of the division's best all-around fighters, but his route back to a title shot had become messy after he withdrew from a scheduled challenge against Islam Makhachev the day before UFC 311. Beating Ruffy by decision might have kept him near the front of the line. Knocking him out made it much harder to argue for someone else.

Tsarukyan has now won six straight UFC fights. More importantly, his last performance answered the complaint that his strongest work can be too controlled or too dependent on wrestling. He absorbed danger, adjusted and finished a dangerous striker before the first round ended.

The belt is clear; the opponent is not

Justin Gaethje currently holds the lightweight championship, but his future is uncertain. Gaethje has discussed retirement, and no defense against Tsarukyan has been made official. If Gaethje continues, that is the cleanest fight the UFC can make: the reigning champion against the contender who has done the most to earn the opportunity.

If Gaethje walks away, the division gets complicated in a hurry. Ilia Topuria remains a major name after losing the belt, while other established contenders will push for a vacant-title fight. Tsarukyan's position should still be strong, but an empty belt tends to invite politics, timing problems and bigger-name alternatives.

That is why his latest statement feels like progress without closure. He says the title shot is guaranteed. He cannot yet say whether he is preparing for Gaethje, Topuria or somebody else.

No more featherweight talk for now

Tsarukyan had floated the idea of cutting to 145 pounds if the UFC kept him waiting. He now says lightweight is where he belongs and that he wants to build his career there.

That is the sensible choice. A featherweight cut would create a new set of questions, and he is already positioned for the biggest fight available at 155 pounds. Moving down only made sense as leverage. If the UFC has genuinely promised him a title fight, there is no reason to leave.

Tsarukyan is still keeping busy outside the Octagon, but his goal has not changed. He wants the UFC belt, and he says he wants to defend it often if he wins it. The next few months should reveal whether the promotion's plans match his confidence.

For now, the lightweight picture has a clear next challenger and no clear championship fight. Tsarukyan says his turn comes in early 2027. The UFC still has to tell everyone who will meet him there.
